Where to buy on Koh Phangan: choosing the right area

West-coast sunsets, the quiet north, the upscale east — Koh Phangan's areas are very different buys. A practical guide to which side of the island suits which buyer.

Phangan is a small island, but its areas are not interchangeable. Where you buy shapes your access to town, whether you wake to the sunrise or wind down to the sunset, how a rental performs, and how much land your budget covers. Here is how the island breaks down for a buyer.

The west coast — sunsets and wellness

The island's most established expat and wellness side, facing the sunset. Sri Thanu is the yoga-and-wellness heart; Haad Yao, Hin Kong and Wok Tum run a tourist-residential mix along long west-coast beaches, up to the Koh Ma sandbar at Mae Haad. Strong rental demand, the most amenities, the busiest in season.

The south — town, port and access

Thong Sala is the main town and ferry port: banks, schools, the hospital, the markets. Ban Tai and Ban Khai sit along the accessible south coast, and inland Ban Nai Suan trades a sea view for space. This is the practical choice for year-round living.

The north — quiet beaches and fishing-village calm

Quieter and more scenic: Chaloklum is a working fishing village, Haad Salad a calm northern beach, and Bottle Beach a genuinely remote north shore reached by boat or trail. For buyers who want distance from the crowds.

The east — secluded and upscale

The sunrise side, more remote, and home to the island's premium pockets. Thong Nai Pan is the upscale east-coast bay; Than Sadet borders a national park and waterfall; Haad Rin holds the Full Moon beach; Haad Yuan and Haad Tien are secluded coves.

Inland — views and value

Away from the coast, elevation buys panoramas. Khao Khao Haeng and the central inland areas trade beach proximity for hill views and more land per baht.

How to choose

Start from how you will actually use the property — daily living, a rental, or a view to wake up to — and let that pick the coast. Browse what is available by area on the listings map, or read the full district guides. Once you have shortlisted an area, we will tell you what each plot's zoning and access actually allow before you make the trip.

Key points

  • The west coast (Sri Thanu, Haad Yao) is the sunset side and the established wellness and expat scene.
  • The south, around Thong Sala, is the most connected — town, port, schools — and the easiest for year-round living.
  • The north and east are quieter and more scenic; Thong Nai Pan is the island's upscale east-coast pocket.
  • Inland areas trade beach proximity for elevation, views and more land per baht.
