Off-grid solar and battery storage for a Koh Phangan villa: 2026 costs and when it actually pays off
A grid-tied solar system with no battery pays back in about 4-6 years but does nothing during an outage. Adding battery storage roughly doubles the upfront cost and stretches payback to 8-12 years, but buys outage independence on an island where the PEA grid is genuinely intermittent. Full off-grid — no PEA connection at all — is a different, more expensive proposition reserved for plots the grid doesn't reach.

Is battery storage worth adding to a solar system on Koh Phangan, given the island's grid problems? For most villas the honest answer is: it depends on what you're buying it for. A battery system does not meaningfully improve the economics of PEA's 2026 rooftop buyback scheme, covered in PEA's 2026 rooftop solar buyback scheme — it's a separate purchase, bought for outage protection and energy independence, not for a better payback on the panels themselves.
Why outage protection is a real consideration here
Koh Phangan's grid is supplied entirely by PEA, and villa owners and property managers on the island describe it as genuinely intermittent — cable faults and surges during high tourist season are a recurring cause of outages, and PEA's own long-term fix is a new undersea cable upgrade still working through planning. For a villa relying on well or pump-fed water, an outage isn't just inconvenient; it can mean no running water alongside no power.
Three configurations, three different price points
- Grid-tied, no battery — the cheapest option and the one PEA's 2026 buyback scheme is built around. Roughly ฿130,000–250,000 installed for a 5 kW system (around ฿25,000–50,000 per kW, falling at larger sizes — a 10 kW system runs closer to ฿250,000–430,000). Payback on electricity-bill savings alone typically lands around 4-6 years. Zero outage protection: when PEA's line goes down, so does the villa.
- Hybrid — grid-tied with battery — stays connected to PEA and draws from the grid when the battery runs low, but switches to battery automatically during an outage. Battery storage roughly doubles the all-in cost: a 5 kW system with battery runs around ฿300,000–400,000, and a 10 kW system with a 14 kWh battery lands near ฿400,000. Payback stretches to roughly 8-12 years once the battery is priced in, because the battery's main return is resilience, not the PEA buyback rate. This is the right configuration for the great majority of Phangan villas that have a grid connection but want to keep the pool pump, fridges and wifi running through an outage.
- Full off-grid — no PEA connection at all — only makes sense where grid connection genuinely isn't available or is prohibitively expensive to run in, which on Koh Phangan mainly means remote or elevated plots covered in guides like Bottle Beach and Than Sadet. It needs a substantially larger battery bank sized for multiple cloudy days plus a backup generator, pushing all-in costs well past ฿400,000-500,000 depending on load, with no feed-in income to offset any of it.
What the battery itself is worth
Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries — the standard chemistry sold in Thailand today — are typically rated for 3,000-6,000+ charge cycles, working out to roughly 10-15 years of daily use before capacity degrades meaningfully, with warranties usually running 10 years or a set cycle count, whichever comes first. That lifespan roughly matches the horizon over which the battery pays for itself through resilience rather than a specific monetary return, which is the honest way to think about this purchase: it's insurance against outages priced in baht, not a faster path to profit than the panels alone.
Sizing the system to actual daytime load
As with the PEA buyback scheme, self-consumption is what makes the economics work: a system and battery sized to the villa's own daytime and evening load — pool pump, water pump, fridges, wifi, a portion of the AC — captures far more value than one sized around exporting surplus at PEA's 2.20 baht/kWh rate. Get an installer to size the system against your actual meter history, not a generic 5 kW package, before committing.
The practical takeaway: if the goal is a lower electricity bill, skip the battery and take the 4-6 year payback on panels alone. If the goal is keeping the villa running through an outage, budget for the hybrid configuration and its longer payback — and reserve full off-grid for plots the PEA grid genuinely doesn't reach.
Key points
- Grid-tied solar with no battery: ~฿130,000-250,000 for 5 kW, payback ~4-6 years, but zero protection during a PEA outage.
- Hybrid (grid-tied + battery): roughly doubles the cost (~฿300,000-400,000 for 5 kW), stretches payback to ~8-12 years, but keeps the villa running through outages — the right fit for most grid-connected Phangan villas.
- Full off-grid (no PEA connection): needs a much larger battery bank plus generator backup, ฿400,000-500,000+; only makes sense where grid connection isn't realistically available.
- LFP batteries are typically rated 3,000-6,000+ cycles (~10-15 years of use), with warranties around 10 years — treat the battery as resilience insurance, not a faster payback than panels alone.
- Koh Phangan's PEA grid is genuinely intermittent, with cable faults and high-season demand surges a recurring cause of outages, which is the real case for a battery here.
